DALLAS MAN ARRESTED AFTER ALLEGEDLY THREATENING SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF
Dallas police have arrested Andre Dwayne Williams, 29, for allegedly threatening to "shoot up" the Texas School for the Deaf in Austin. According to the arrest warrant, Williams allegedly was communicating with a student at the school through a video and signed that he was going to shoot up the school. Police said the threat by Williams was made after his girlfriend broke off their relationship. Williams is a former student of the school, according to the warrant. / WFAA

DEAF MOSSYROCK BURGLAR SENTENCED TO DRUG TREATMENT
A deaf Mossyrock man held since Sept. 15 on suspicion of a burglary of a vacation property was sentenced Wednesday to a residential drug treatment program. James W. McMillion, 37, pleaded guilty on Oct. 7 to one charge of residential burglary. In exchange for his plea, the Lewis County Prosecutor’s Office agreed to recommend him for the Drug Offender Sentencing Alternative program, or DOSA, if he qualified. / The Chronicle

BILLS FILED TO HELP DEAF FLORIDIANS WHO MAY FACE ARREST
Two state lawmakers are hoping to offer more to help deaf Floridians, who are facing arrest. Sen. Darren Soto (D-Orlando) says he filed the bill because of a woman in his district. “Essentially, she had a dispute with her mother, and the law enforcement officer allowed the mother to serve as an interpreter, and this caused some miscommunication for Ms. Vasquez to actually be detained, and they charged her with resisting arrest and battery on a law enforcement officer, and they took away her daughter,” said Soto. / WFSU

DEAF MAN ACCUSED OF TAKING INDECENT LIBERTIES
Buncombe sheriff's deputies have arrested a Waynesville man, accused of sexual activities with a minor. Victor Paul Conner, 25, of Savage St. was charged with two counts of taking indecent liberties with a child under the age of 16 on April 15, according to warrants filed with the Buncombe County Magistrate's Court. The defendant is deaf, unable to read or write or used sign language, warrants said. / Citizen-Times

SPELLING BEE HELD FOR DEAF AND HARD-OF-HEARING STUDENTS
Applause, both in the form of noisy clapping and people silently holding up and shaking their hands, filled two small auditoriums in the Hillvue Heights Church on Thursday during the sixth annual Deaf and Hard of Hearing Spelling Bee. Miranda Stewart, a teacher of deaf and hard of hearing students for Warren County Public Schools, said the event was founded after a need for a stronger deaf and hard-of-hearing community in Kentucky schools was identified. / Bowling Green Daily News

Some members of Belleville’s deaf community held a protest outside the Sir James Whitney School for the Deaf on Monday, Nov. 9 to show their displeasure over the hiring of a non-deaf superintendent for the school. Leaders of the group said they intended to protest until three demands were met: that the new superintendent resign, that the school’s process for hiring be inclusive and open and include parents in the decision making and that a deaf superintendent be hired for the role. / Inside Belleville

ADVOCATE ILLUMINATES CHALLENGES DEAF PEOPLE FACE WITH SOCIAL MEDIA SELF PORTRAIT
While many people might take their ability to hear for granted, a local deaf advocate is helping to remind hearing people about the challenges that deaf people face on a daily basis. Vancouverite Landon Krentz has worked with various arts and event organizations, including Made in B.C.—Dance on Tour, the Queer Arts Festival, Mascall Dance Studio, and the Vancouver Pride Society. When deaf children are abused, they can have extra difficulties in letting people know what has happened. DEAF TEENAGER WINS NATIONAL AWARD
A profoundly deaf teenager from Brighton has won a national award, given by Dame Esther Rantzen. 14-year-old Esmee Drake was presented the 'Life-Changing Child Partnership of the Year Award' at the Hearing Dogs Awards in recognition of her inspirational partnership with hearing dog Cola. Esmee was born six weeks prematurely, without an oesophagus and with a hole in her heart. After she was given hearing dog Cola, her life turned around. / ITV News

PARENTS CLAIM HOSPITAL DISCRIMINATED AGAINST THEM
Like all parents-to-be, Kate and Anthony Hinton carefully planned for the arrival of their baby, choosing the hospital they believed would be best for the delivery. The couple were stunned when staff at Westmead Private Hospital refused to provide a professional interpreter for Mr Hinton, who is deaf. After failing to reach a solution with the hospital, the couple switched to the public Westmead Hospital three-quarters of the way through the pregnancy, a stressful situation they say no other couple should have to endure. / The Sydney Morning Herald

A 12-year-old girl from Australia, whose hearing is deteriorating, would like to meet Taylor Swift before she becomes completely deaf. Jorja Hope, from East Maitland in Australia, was diagnosed with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, which will slowly worsen over time. She was born prematurely and, as a result, has suffered a number of complications. She has already had a number of surgeries on her ears, the Maitland Mercury writes. / Health24

DEAF CHILD LUCKY TO HAVE HIS SIGHT AFTER FIREWORK EXPLODES IN HIS FACE
A 7-year-old boy is lucky to have his sight after a firework exploded in his face. Jahmeil Galant and a relative, also 7, were playing together when an older child threw a firecracker in his direction, his mother Sharlene Galant said. “He went closer to have a look at what it was and picked it up. It started spinning and it exploded,” she said. “My son is deaf and didn't realize what was happening. When the children brought him home and I saw his blood-spattered face, I was horrified. He couldn’t open his eyes.” / News24

MONEY DISPUTE: DEAF AND DUMB MAN DEPRIVED OF EYESIGHT
A deaf and dumb man lost his eyes in a shooting incident in a Gojra police precinct on Sunday. Jimmy Carter said his brother Nomi Masih, 32, who was deaf and dumb, had had a dispute over money with Younas Masih, a relative. He said Younas Masih and two friends abducted Nomi Masih on October 11. He said they had beaten him up for several days. Later, they shot at him and one of the bullets grazed his forehead, he said. A two-and-a-half-year deaf and mute girl was allegedly raped by a 30-year-old man in Bhilwara following which the accused was arrested. They call it Silent Sunday, but you could find plenty of people being loud and proud in their support for the Arkansas School for the Deaf on November 8. This 26th annual fundraiser brought together some 50 chefs and restaurants from around Arkansas for a friendly food competition of their signature dishes. School officials have a specific goal in mind for the money that came in from Sunday's party. "This year, we're using our money to develop a visual communications system on our campus," said ASD Director of Communications Stacey Tatera. / THV11.com

Elementary students at the Oklahoma School for the Deaf are fostering friendship during recess with a happy place for students who feel lonely or want a friend. They call that place the Buddy Bench. OSD Director of Student Assessment Traci Prince was motivated to act after watching a news story about Christian Bucks, a first-grader from Roundtown, Pennsylvania. LUIS MIGUEL DEAF? BALLAD STAR'S HEARING CONDITION AFFECTING HIS TOUR?
Luis Miguel, known for his sweeping love ballads is said to be going deaf. The loss in hearing could result in a change in his performance schedule across the globe. The singer is currently touring Latin America and plans to head to the United States in December. As Latin Times recalls, the singer was recently sued for breaching his contract. WALK THE MOON MAKES A MUSIC VIDEO FOR THE DEAF
How do you make a music video for the deaf and hard of hearing? That is what AT&T and indie pop outfit Walk the Moon had to figure out for the band's song "Different Colors." The two teamed up with the Deaf Professional Arts Network to create a music video using ASL for AT&T's "Feel the Music" campaign. As the director of the video, Jules Dameron, said in a "behind the scenes" video, the "Feel the Music" campaign is simply giving a professional sheen to what the deaf community has already been doing. / NBC News

Two young sisters from St. Cloud, Minn. are on a unique journey together as they celebrate each new word they learn to say -- this comes after both were born unable to hear. Job Title: Assistant Program Director, Case Management Program

Description: This position assists in overseeing the blended case management program provided to adults and children residing in the community. Responsibilities include: assist the program director in daily supervision of case managers; coordinate with other service providers; help manage program expenses; support consumers living in the community by working together to enhance their independence and socialization.

Qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree in the Human Services field is preferred.
