ACLU FILES LAWSUIT AGAINST KANSAS CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS AFTER 7-YEAR-OLD HANDCUFFED
The American Civil Liberties Union of Missouri has filed a lawsuit against Kansas City Public Schools in response to the 2014 handcuffing of a second grader who was crying and screaming in class while being bullied. In 2014, Kalyb Wiley Primm, who was 7 years old and less than four feet tall at the time, was being teased for having a hearing impediment inside a classroom at George Melcher Elementary School in Kansas City, Missouri, according to the lawsuit. COURT AWARDS $10,000 TO DEAF LITIGANT DENIED INTERPRETER
A deaf Indianapolis man who was denied a sign language interpreter at his court-ordered mediation of a child-custody dispute will receive $10,380 in damages, a federal judge ruled. District Judge Jane Magnus-Stinson on Tuesday ordered $10,000 in compensatory damages awarded to Dustin King for emotional distress and $380 in attorney fees for the process of requesting an interpreter through the court. She wrote King’s request of $20,000 in fees for emotional distress was excessive. / The Indiana Lawyer
DEAF WOMAN PLANS DUNKIN' DONUTS DEMONSTRATION AFTER OUTRAGE OVER SERVICE
After being appalled by her treatment at a Framingham Dunkin' Donuts, Jessica Scanzillo is taking action in the hopes that she can prevent her experience from happening to someone else. Scanzillo, who is deaf, said that Labor Day morning she and her three kids pulled up to the drive through window to place their order. She regularly writes down her order on her phone's "memo" app and shows it to the attendant at the window, but on this day, she said the employee wouldn't accept it and told her to go inside. / Patch.com
UT RESEARCHERS GET $20M GRANT FOR DEAF STUDIES
The deaf community at the University of Texas is getting a huge educational boost thanks to a $20-million grant awarded to UT Austin Researchers. The award aims to improve education options for deaf and hard of hearing students after high school. A new educational center will launch on New Year's Day with training programs for adult education. The 5-year award comes from the US Department of Education. / TWC News
NEW PROGRAM OFFERS FREE TABLETS FOR DEAF, LOW-INCOME MARYLANDERS
Low-income Marylanders whose disabilities prevent them from using a standard telephone could be eligible for a free tablet through a new initiative announced Monday by Gov. Larry Hogan. Maryland Relay, a public service offered to state residents who are deaf or hard of hearing, is accepting applications for the tablets — which will come loaded with video chat or captioned phone software — through the Maryland Accessible Telecommunications program. / Capital Gazette
LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT TO RECEIVE TRAINING ON POLICING THE DEAF COMMUNITY
Darrin J. Griffin, assistant professor of Communications Studies and faculty advisor to the group Deaf Hands Speak, and Erin Powell, an interpreter who is teaching an ASL class in the University’s Honors College this semester, will host a training session for about 24 law enforcement officers from across Central and North Alabama. Saturday's hastily-convened closed-door annual general meeting of the Canadian Hearing Society (CHS) is a step away from transparency and a step towards a troubling future, the president of the union representing CHS staff warned. DEAF GIRL HEADS TO UTECH
Reaching the college level for some is a tremendous feat. For Amakeda Wallen it is even more special. Defeating all odds, the 18-year-old has become the first deaf person to be invited to read for a degree at the University of Technology (UTECH). DEAF STUDENTS GET APP TO ASSIST WITH LEARNING
Students of the Lister Mair/Gilby High School for the Deaf will benefit from an interactive educational software that is expected to enhance the way they are taught an aspect of the English language. Developed by the University of Technology (UTech), the software U-TOUCH II, uses the Jamaican Sign Language and Standard English to teach prepositions to the deaf and hard of hearing community. “This software seeks to bridge that gap by enabling communication using prepositions in sign language. / Jamaica Observer
MEDICINAL MISHAPS LEAVE 30,000 CHILDREN DEAF EACH YEAR
Around 30,000 Chinese children are rendered deaf after using medicines unsuitable for children each year, says a China Central Television (CCTV) advertisement, reports the People’s Daily. The video clip features 5-year-old deaf girl Fu Xinuo. Public schools in Indiana serve about 2,400 students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Of those students a growing number now use cochlear implants. As technology develops, and cochlear implants become more common, many public schools are still working to catch up. A TECHNOLOGY UPGRADE GIFT FOR ST. MARY'S SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF STUDENTS

WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE ALMOST DEAF, BUT NOT QUITE

OLIVIA HUNTER A VISUAL LEARNER AFTER BEING BORN DEAF
Olivia Hunter can throw a mean softball. She can also paint a pretty picture. The Wellesley native is a visual learner that picks up on tendencies and nuances more easily than others. And it probably has to do with one singular fact. STUDENTS WHO ARE DEAF FACE CHALLENGES ON CAMPUS
At age 23, Kirsten Pribula heard a water sprinkler for the first time. She stood in the middle of College Green for a few minutes trying to preserve the moment and remember the sound. Pribula lost her hearing between the ages of 3 and 4 due to autoimmune inner ear disease. AIED is a progressive hearing loss condition caused when the immune system attacks the inner ear. Pribula underwent cochlear implant surgery when she was 8 years old. / The Post

After passionate pleas and objections from the deaf community, Theatre Cedar Rapids is moving forward with producing the play “Tribes." The controversy arose this week on social media, after a cast list was announced by theater officials on Aug. 31.
